Illayathalapathy Vijay’s ‘Puli’ was getting mixed to negative reviews from critics and social media users, but the films seems to have caught the fancy of women and children , thus garnering a box office receipt of close to Rs. 71 crores in the opening weekend worldwide. It has been a great year for fantasy period films.
After SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali went all guns blazing and conquered the box office, setting a plethora of records tumbling, it is now turn for yet another highly anticipated fantasy film to rule the roost at box office.
Critics and social media fans may have panned ‘Puli’ but that has not affected its box office results as the fantasy adventure has become the second highest grosser in the opening weekend after Shankar’s ‘I’ proving the might of Illayathalapathy Vijay as a crowd puller.
Unofficial trade figures show that ‘Puli’ has collected 64crores worldwide with Tamil Nadu alone accounting for 30 Crores. With no other major film releasing in the following two weeks industry pundits believe that the film could cross the 100 crore market.
As we estimated yesterday, #Puli‘s 1st week TN gross is 37 – 37.5cr.. WW gross of Puli is around 80 – 82cr.. This is really huge for a movie which received Negative reviews & Delayed release.. Delayed released caused atleast 10cr loss WW.. If not for that 10cr loss, the movie would have collected 90cr+ for the first week itself !!

Puli released on oct 1, 2 govt holiday , sat & sun but Yenni Arindhaal released on feb 5 which is normal weekend. You can understand who is mass.

Puli” has grossed Rs 31.50 crore from Tamil Nadu (Rs 27 crore net business), Rs 3.90 crore in Kerala (Rs 3.25 crore net business), Rs 5.70 crore from Karnataka (Rs 4.75 crore net business), Rs 4.65 crore in Andhra Pradesh (Rs 4.05 crore net business ) and Rs 5.40 crore (net business of Rs 3.95 crore) from rest of India to take its tally to Rs 51.15 crore (Rs 43 crore net business).
“Yennai Arindhaal” had raked in Rs 31.25 crore (Rs 24.04 crore net business) in Tamil Nadu, Rs 2.75 (Rs 2.25 crore net business) crore in Kerala, Rs 3.65 crore (Rs 2.81 crore net business) in Karnataka and Rs 1 (Rs 75 lakh net business) crore from rest of India to take India gross business to Rs 38.65 crore.
However, it has to be noted that “Puli” is ahead of Yennai Arindhaal” by just Rs 25 lakh in Tamil Nadu. It is the business in other territories that has made a big difference.
